Rudall & Rose eight keyed flute

We produce keyed and unkeyed wooden Flutes in the keys of F, Eb, D, C, Bb & Alto using African Blackwood and sterling silver. All flutes have a tuning slide and all ferrules (rings) and keys are made from silver. Any number of keys can be fitted to an unkeyed or partially keyed flute at a later stage.

The flutes are either Rudall & Rose or Pratten design, incorporating some changes from the originals.

I started making flutes in 1978 with one aim in mind: to make a good flute which would allow players to improve their standard of playing. The undercut (cutting away of the inside of the mouth-hole) used in the flute makes this an easy-to-blow instrument and this combined with a comfortable stretch for the hands means that the flute is suitable for beginners as well as proficient players.

The appearance, playing quality and reliability of a flute are of great importance to me and ‘precision’ is a key element in the making of the instruments. Having worked in flute-making for over 30 years, a great deal of knowledge and experience has been gained, resulting in instruments that can be relied upon.

The wood we use is air dried and worked gradually in several stages to allow the wood to settle between the stages of the production process. Silver rings are added to the completed flute. These can be hand engraved if wished.
